Hydro Electric Schemes Approved
Two new hydro schemes have been approved by the Scottish Government. These projects will bring hydro electric power to more than 3500 homes in Scotland.
The 3.5 Megawatt Black Rock scheme, near Evanton in Ross-shire, will supply electricity for over 2,000 homes and the 2.5 Megawatt scheme on Allt Coire Chaorach, near Crianlarich, will power over 1,500 homes. Using the ‘run of river’ formula, electricity is created using the elevation and natural flow of the mountain rivers. The Scottish Government currently has 32 renewable energy applications under consideration, including 7 hydro projects, a wave energy scheme and 24 wind farms.
With a target of 50% of electricity sourced from renewables by 2020 the Energy Minister Jim Mather said:
“We are determined to exploit all of Scotland’s diverse renewables potential and we will continue to support sustainable hydro development – large and small – to tackle climate change and contribute to economic growth.”
